The Impact of Homelessness on Children

Abstract
In the past several years, families with children have joined the ranks of the homeless in significant numbers. These families now constitute a third of the homeless population and are rapidly growing. This article describes the effects of growing up in shelters and welfare hotels, and discusses various coping strategies that children have developed to adapt to the stresses of homelessness. It includes a summary of what is known about the children's developmental, emotional and learning needs.
