Origin and Characteristics of Venturia inaequalis Melanoproteins Active in the Apple Scab Disease

Abstract
Extracellular pigment was observed only when intracellular pigment was present, suggesting that the former is derived from the latter. Pigment production was restricted to the sac contents. Pigment production is not necessarily associated with mechanically damaged or old autolyzed mycelium. Pigment secretion into the culture fluid was not a consequence of adverse growth conditions and may occur in the host. The phenolic fingerprints displayed by each of the 3 pigments after chromatography of their reductive fission products showed a common pattern of 8 resolvable spots and various combinations of 4 additional spots. Amino acid analysis indicated a complex mixture for all 3 pigments. Melanin and protein accounted for 24-42% of the pigment. No carbohydrate was detected.
