Abstract
RADIATION therapy has played little part in the therapeutic managerment of patients with gastric adenocarcinoma. In a retrospective study, we found no difference in survival between a group of 24 patients with localized but unresectable gastric carcinoma treated with radiation therapy and 43 patients with similar disease who received no specific treatment.20 However, there are reports that chemotherapy with fluorouracil given in conjunction with radiation therapy has produced encouraging results.21,22 We performed a randomized double-blind study of patients who had locally unresectable gastric adenocarcinoma and in whom all known disease could be encompassed by conventional radiation therapy fields.21All patients received radiation therapy at the rate of 900 rads to 1,200 rads per week to a total dose of 3,500 rads to 4,000 rads.
