Abstract
C. tarsalis can transmit fowl-pox virus to susceptible fowls for at least 28 days, the longest period tested. Fowl-pox virus can be transmitted from infected to susceptible fowls with an efficiency of 47% under optimum experimental conditions. The insect transmitted the virus from the lesion site from the 2nd through 13th postinoculation days. Transmission did not occur when the insect fed on areas of the fowl''s body other than the lesion. The mechanism of transmission by C. tarsalis appears to be purely extrinsic. There was no evidence of multiplication of the virus in the insect, no latent period was observed, and the virus concentration gradually diminished in the insect until it was negligible 2 weeks after ingestion of virus.
