Women as nutrition mediators: A case study from Sri Lanka

Abstract
This paper discusses the role of women in regard to food production and food handling and the possible consequences that this may have for child nutrition in a rural society in Sri Lanka. The paper is based on data collected through participant observation, formal and informal interviews and group discussions. The focus is on women as nutrition mediators between social processes, taking place outside and within households, and child nutrition. It was found that, in this society, it was women's access to material resources in particular and to some extent their lack of knowledge about feeding of the children during the weaning period that restricted women's opportunities to ensure their children adequate nutrition. These findings are discussed in relation to development efforts.
