Abstract
Of 300 children with streptococcal pharyngitis, one group received a mixture of penicillin G procaine and penicillin G benzathine; a second was given a prescription for ten days of penicillin phenoxymethyl (parents of this group were given no special instructions); and a third was given identical prescriptions but their parents received specific counseling on the importance of taking the medication. There were 14 treatment failures plus relapse in group 1, 25 in group 2, and 10 in group 3. Compliance in taking penicillin was 58% in group 2 and 80% in group 3, a significant difference. Oral therapy with adequate parental counseling is as efficacious as intramuscular injection. Keywords
