The Content of Some Trace Elements in Blood Serum of Patients with Larynx Cancer

Abstract
The levels of four trace elements (iron, copper, zinc, and cobalt) were investigated in 52 patients suffering from larynx cancer at different stages of the disease. The changes of iron content values in blood serum were additionally determined after oral load with iron preparation at 3 and 6 hours. The saturation coefficient as well as the latent capacity of iron binding were also determined. The results obtained prior to treatment and after laryngectomy are indicative of constant disturbances in iron metabolism in the first place and of considerable deviations from normal values for the other trace elements. The changes found seem to be one of the important factors influencing the morbidity from malignant tumours of epithelial origin in the upper air passages.
