The Effect of Radioactive Tags on the Activity of Rodents

Abstract
A comparative study of the activity of Co60- tagged versus normal Microtus ochrogaster and Baiomys taylori was conducted in the laboratory. Eight individuals, 2 of each sex of each species were used,l of each pair as a control, the other as tagged experimental animal. Activity of each pair was compared for 48 hr. prior to tagging one of them, for 48 hr. immediately after tagging, and at subsequent intervals of 4 and 8 weeks after tagging. Gross weights of the animals were recorded before and after each 48 hr. experimental period, and food and water consumption of each was recorded. No significant differences in activity between tagged and untagged animals due to the subcutaneous presence of the radioactive tag were apparent during the 8 weeks of the experiment.
