Abstract
A survey was conducted of 503 business, industrial, consulting, governmental, nonprofit research, and educational organizations to determine the current status of activities, programs, and characteristics of the human factors and biotechnology professions. Of the organizations surveyed, more than 77% responded and provided such information on their human factors and biotechnology operations as size, reporting level, professional specialties, termination rates, salaries, professional society activities, sources and amounts of funding, computer use, publications, facilities and facility investments, and program activities. Comments were received concerning problems facing the profession, means for increasing effectiveness of the profession, trends, and growth projections.
