Abstract
This paper was written while the author was a Visitor in the Centre for Research into the Education of Adults, Department of Adult Education, University of Nottingham. It is in fact a group product. The stimulus and encouragement to write it, and many of the ideas it propounds, I owe to my friends in the ‘Canberra Study Circle’–Gary and Coral Watson, Alan Davies, Michael Breen, Sylvia Gleeson, Geoff Pryor, Sarah Morison, Paul Williams, and other occasional visitors. Keywords
