Abstract
This paper is concerned with the problem of determining grades on a common scale for two groups offering a common paper in an examination. It offers three theoretical methods and compares the results of applying them to some data provided by the East Midland Regional Examinations Board. 1 1 The writer wishes to express his thanks to the Board for making the data available and to Dr D.L. Nuttall, of the Schools Council for his encouragement and for enabling the work to be carried out. Thanks are further due to Mr C.R. Tompsett and Miss M.F. Backhouse for punching cards and to the Oxford University Computing Service for computer facilities. The views expressed in this paper are not necessarily those of the Schools Council nor of the East Midland Regional Examinations Board. View all notes
