Abstract
The problem of intervertebral disc pathology (herniation, prolapsus) especially in younger persons (30–50 years of age) remains as yet unsolved. Observations on 26 post mortem samplestaken from individuals aged 0–83 years suggest a pattern of normal ageing which has not been described before and which has, in the authors’ opinion, to be compared with pathologically-changed, surgically-removed intervertebral discs. Also the occurrence of a lipid containing age pigment is discussed. A hypothesis is forwarded aboutthe origin of disc pathology in younger persons. Keywords
