VARIATION OF REID INDEX MEASUREMENTS WITHIN MAOR BRONCHIAL TREE

Abstract
The Reid index (bronchial mucous gland to wall ratio) was measured at 6 sites in the major bronchi of 27 patients. There was some variation of the Reid index in individual patients from site to site, but there was a significant correlation between any 1 site, and the mean Reid index obtained from all 6 sites in individual cases. The mean Reid index of both main-stem bronchi appears to be the appropriate measurement for epidemiologic surveys.
