Abstract
Catches (numbers per tow) of 25 species of groundfish of the Scotian Shelf were estimated for five different bottom types on which the tows were made. An index of selectivity was calculated for each species. Selectivity ranged from highly specific in shallow-water species on sand and gravel bottom, to broad in deep-water species associated mainly with mud and silt bottoms, and in semipelagic species. Gradation in bottom-sediment particle size from northeast to southwest is correlated with clines in shallow-water fish abundance. Bottom type and water depth are correlated with each other and with fish distribution.Key words: bottom type, groundfish, sediment typeThis publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
