Abstract
This chapter reviews the nature and importance of epidemiological research and discusses some of the methodological issues which pertain, with examples from relevant literature. Affective disorders, dementia, paranoid disorders, neurotic illnesses and alcohol abuse are individually covered. For each of these the definition and classification is given and the relevant research regarding the prevalence, incidence, risk factors and outcome discussedKeywords
