Abstract
The paper presents a review of the selection index procedures developed by Smith and Hazel. This index has the property that the change in genetic economic value is maximized, but may have the undersirable property that it induces some changes in component attributes of the index which are undersirable. The procedure is developed for calculation of a selection index which ensures that the changes in some constitutent attributes are zero or changes in some specified linear functions of attributes are zero. It may happen for example that egg weight contributes information about egg production which can be used in an index, but that the breeder desires to keep egg weight constant. The procedure is illustrated with examples in poultry breeding which are based on best available information on components of variability of different attributes. The effects of restriction on the choice of selection index are exemplified. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
