Abstract
Timely simulated distillation (SIMDIS) analysis of refinery process streams is allowing better process variable control in the petroleum industry. To satisfy the constantly increasing demand for SIMDIS analyses of crude oil (CRUDE) and lube-range (LUBE) samples, a robotics system is employed. The method used for SIMDIS analyses of such heavy samples containing residual material boiling above 1000°F requires that an internal standard material be weighed into each sample. This is a very time-intensive activity. Further, the accuracy of the manual analyses is not acceptable for process control. The use of the robotics system improves the accuracy to an acceptable level and significantly decreases sample preparation time. Keywords
