Abstract
Mitosis in the corneal epithelium of the rat occurs, normally only in both basal layers, with a frequency of about 1:250. Parenteral colchicine injn., which inhibits mitosis in metaphase, makes possible detn. of its duration (60-70 min.) and resting period (8-10 days). Mitosis inhibition may be (a) immediate, being caused by pharmacologically active inhibitors, X-rays and beta-rays or (b) latent, as from u.-v. irradiation, mustard gas, etc., taking several hrs. to develop. Higher concns. of u.-v. rays or mustard gas cause nuclear damage of enzymatic nature. In healing, cell movements without participation of mitosis are a major factor and are inhibited by low temp., anoxia and enzyme poisons, notably the respiratory ones. Sulfhydryl groups are important and Ca excess also inhibits the movements. Surface forces may be a factor. Keywords
