Abstract
Mechanical ventilation is standard and effective treatment in most cases of neonatal respiratory failure. For the small minority of infants who do not respond to that regimen, the treatment of choice is now extracorporeal oxygenation, administered by a modified version of the heart-lung machine. The technique and indications for its use are now being refined. Keywords
