Total diet study of intake of fungicide imazalil in Osaka, Japan

Abstract
The daily intake of the fungicide imazalil in Osaka, Japan was determined using total diet samples. The average recovery rate from both low‐ and high‐fat samples to which imazalil had been added was confirmed to be more than 85% and 94%, respectively. Of the 3 total diet samples collected in each of the fiscal years 1989 to 1991, only in that collected in 1991 was an imazalil residue detected (0.0059 ppm overall). On the basis of this value, the daily intake of imazalil was calculated to be 11.2 μg. The amount is 2.2% of the acceptable daily intake when the average Japanese body weight is taken to be 50 kg. Imazalil was detected at 0.045 ppm in the fruit portion of a grapefruit and at 1.96 ppm in a lemon (whole fruit) which were included in the total diet sample. No other foodstuffs in the sample were found to contain imazalil residues. The level of imazalil in whole fruit for grapefruits, oranges and lemons on the market was 0.18 ± 0.29 ppm, 0.48 ± 0.62 ppm and 0.85 ± 0.72 ppm, respectively. No imazalil residue was detected in jams or fruit drinks.Keywords
