Abstract
Relative abundance of 2 lemmings Lemmus and Dicrostonyx varied greatly in different parts of s. Baffin Island in 1953, and also from year to year in the same area. Their population fluctuations sometimes do not coincide. There was also a considerable local variation in lemming density even in 1 valley. Lemmus increased greatly during the summer, in spite of heavy predation from snowy owls (Nyctea scandiaca), which reared large broods. In places the vegetation was severely damaged. There was no sign of starvation.
