Abstract
Adolescent sexual behaviour is an area of contention, especially with regard to intercourse between consenting parties where the age of one of those involved is such that a criminal act may be deemed to have been committed. One aspect of this which has raised controversy is related to the way in which girls under the age of 16 may be subject to care orders “for their own good” when their sexual behaviour is under scrutiny. Another aspect, which is covered in the present paper, relates to the ways in which the male “offenders” in these relationships are dealt with by the police, and data from Sheffield has been used to shed light on the ways in which the police decide how to handle these offenders, and the consequent effects of the law as it now stands.
