Elimination of Polarization Corrections from Optical Excitation-Function Measurements

Abstract
Woolsey and McConkey have recently described a method by which the effects of instrumental polarization may be eliminated from optical excitation functions measured perpendicular to the exciting beam. It is shown that their method must be the same as that of Burrows and Dunn. For cases where there is strong instrumental polarization, a superior method is described. Two further methods of eliminating instrumental-polarization effects are suggested, in which the excitation is observed at other angles to the exciting beam. A method of measuring the polarization of impact radiation, free from the effects of instrumental polarization, is described and a typical result is presented.
