Abstract
The experimental part of a study which deals with the response and stability of thin-walled tubes under cyclic bending histories is presented (see [7] for theory). Aluminum and steel tubes are cyclically bent in pure bending into the plastic range. It is found that under curvature-symmetric loading histories the tube progressively ovalizes to a critical value at which it buckles. This critical value of ovalization is approximately equal to the value obtained just prior to buckling under monotonic bending. The influence of the material and geometric parameters of the tubes on the phenomenon is studied. It is shown that for the materials studied, the phenomenon can drastically reduce the life expectancy of tubes in the range of D/t of 15 to 80.Keywords
