Abstract
The clinical course of 97 patients with the Buerger syndrome has been studied. Risk factors and prognostic factors which have a bearing on the development and course of the syndrome have been determined. From these data a management programme for patients with the Buerger syndrome has been developed. The clinical course is characterized by acute attacks and long remissions. Thus the management programme is primarily aimed at preventing attacks and, when they occur, in limiting their extent. The known risk factors and prognostic factors demonstrate the overwhelming importance of smoking in both the development and prognosis of the syndrome.
