The water-soluble B-vitamins

Abstract
5. In prophylactic exps. with young rats maintained on diets lacking in only 1 constituent of vit. B2, those deprived of flavin developed a generalized skin affection with loss of hair; those deprived of vit. B6 developed a symmetrical florid dermatitis. In the former case cures were observed and growth was restored in 5 of 10 rats by the administration of 12[gamma] pure flavin daily for 3-4 wks.; in the latter case speedy and complete cures were obtained by administration of vit. B6 as an alcoholic extract of wheat or of maize; only irregular results were shown when vit. B6 was a preparation from yeast.[long dash]6. Exps. on rats with diets of the Bourquin and Sherman type, containing extracts of wheat or maize or their milled products, and with diets containing the whole cereals, indicated that wheat and maize are good sources of vit. B6 and that about 1/3 of the vit. B6 present was extracted with cold 80% alcohol. Wheat appeared to contain more flavin than maize and no flavin was extracted by cold 80% alcohol. Some of the expts. with whole maize and with maize extracts suggested the possibility that a deleterious substance was present in that cereal.
