Abstract
The linearized equations of motion for steady irrotational isentropic flow past a thin body with a sharp trailing edge are used to evaluate the leading terms in the components of the force acting on the body when there is a vortex wake. It is shown that with certain additional assumptions required by the appearance of infinities at the edges of the wake the linearized theory is adequate for the calculation of the lift and drag on a thin body, but not for the calculation of the lateral force, except in special cases, e.g. when the wing is nearly plane. Keywords
