Abstract
Heparin in small doses inhibits the in vitro agglutination of red blood cells coated with auto-antibodies. Subsequent to heparin incubation, the sensitized cells become unreactive also with Coombs'' serum, this being achieved on the expense of heparins anticoagulant activity. The effective concns. used are in no correlation with the initial titer of the direct Coombs test, thus suggesting qualitative differences between autoagglutinins with otherwise identical characteristics (as measured by the present day methods). Expts. in 3 consecutive cases of idiopathic acquired hemolytic anemia are descr. The heparin tolerance of 2 patients tested, was found to be abnormally high.
