Abstract
THE upward trend in divorce during the last two decades and the high rate of remarriage after divorce have increased interest in the demographic aspects of remarriage. Factors associated with the increase in divorce and remarriage and with variations in remarriage among those in different social and economic groups are considered. As many young adults born during the baby boom postpone marriage, and as the divorce rate has risen, more of the marriages now are remarriages and are occurring in their late twenties and thirties. College women are shown to be more likely to marry late or never. The father is reported to be more likely to have custody of the children after divorce if the mother has remarried. Remarriage after divorce varies positively with income level for men and varies negatively with both education and income for women.
