Mainland China's Evolving Nuclear Deterrent

Abstract
Over the last 10 or 15 years, mainland China has been building a solid foundation for its evolving nuclear deterrent—which must eventually be based on long-range, missile-delivered, thermonuclear weapons. What is the primary objective of such a development and how will it affect United States-China relations in the years ahead? Charles H. Murphy is a China specialist and national defense analyst with the Library of Congress.
