Abstract
BY CEPHALOCELE of the posterior part of the orbit is understood cerebral hernia arising from the middle cerebral fossa and penetrating into the posterior part of the orbit behind the bulbus oculi, through a preformed or nonpreformed opening in the wall of the orbit. Posterior cephalocele of the orbit belongs to the group of basal cephaloceles. Besides the basal type, by far the rarest, there are occipital, frontal, parietal and lateral cephaloceles. Cephalocele of the anterior portion of the orbit, generally arising from the nasofrontal region, belongs to the frontal cephaloceles and is much more frequently observed than is the posterior lesion. Stadfeldt,1who was the first in Denmark to assess the available material, found in the literature up to 1902, 20 cases of anterior and 8 cases of posterior cephalocele.
