A summary of 72 questionnaires from the USA and Canada indicated that the tetracyclines at 5 g/cow are the most commonly used drugs in the systemic treatment of acute and chronic mastitis. In acute mastitis, penicillin (1-5 million U) plus streptomycin or neomycin (0.5-1 g) were favoured for prescription preparations. Of commercial udder preparations used, ampicillin or neomycin were most popular. The most recommended prescription for dry cow treatment was 1 million U penicillin + 0.5 g streptomycin or neomycin, with 40 ml furacin liquid as base. Most dairymen are using Bovidine or Chlorhexidine for teat dipping. 43% of 65 thought that oxytocin is very important in mastitis treatment.
