Abstract
This paper gives a brief review of the history of coastal defence as it has developed since the year 1,000. It makes an attempt to outline what may be termed "the philosophy" and its relation to development. The "State of the Art" is described by figures of characteristic designs including new developments. The paper establishes some general rules for future coastal protection and gives an outlook for the future. Keywords
