Abstract
Carbon monoxide, aldehyde and formic acid were identified as reduction products of carbon dioxide in water solution in the pH range 3 to 8.7. The formation of aldehyde as a function of the duration of irradiation at different pH values was studied. Some velocity constants of aldehyde formation were calculated, which decreased with the increase in pH. The presence of ferrous ions led to an increase in yield of the compounds formed. Some probable reaction mechanisms for the reduction of carbon dioxide in water solution and the formation of organic compounds are given.
