Abstract
A double-blind placebo-containing cross-over study of the effect of tetracycline hydrochloride and demethylchlortetracycline hydrochloride on acne is reported. The results do not show either antibiotic to be significantly superior to a placebo when administered in the doses and for the durations stated. The marked placebo response in all controlled studies and the normal distribution of degree of response to placebo in this study further indicate the need for critical appraisal of systemic antibiotic therapy for acne. This knowledge of placebo reactivity or spontaneous resolution or both should be properly recognized as a positive and sometimes potent therapeutic measure.
