Abstract
An algorithm for automatic recognition of handwritten capital letters is described in terms of formal grammars. The formalism is used for a priori computer time and memory optimization. Moreover, the syntactic recognition scheme is extended by introducing the concept of fuzzy sets instead of the usual probabilistic approach. Keywords
