Comparison of the Lazarus-Nelson Peritoneal Lavage Catheter with the Standard Peritoneal Dialysis Catheter in Abdominal Trauma

Abstract
This prospective randomized controlled study compares the standard peritoneal dialysis catheter with the Lazarus-Nelson catheter for diagnostic peritoneal lavage in blunt and penetrating [human] abdominal trauma. The Lazarus-Nelson catheter was introduced in 1979, claiming a technique for peritoneal lavage without risk of complications. The standard peritoneal dialysis catheter was accurate in all studied cases, whereas the Lazarus-Nelson catheter yielded false positive and false negative results. No technical problems were encountered with the standard catheter; a high rate of such problems was experienced with the Lazarus-Nelson catheter, largely related to the design of the catheter itself.
