The Responses of Some TL Albedo Neutron Dosimeters

Abstract
As part of a general study of personnel neutron dosimetry systems, 3 British and 2 German TL albedo dosimeters were compared. They ranged from simple albedo devices to multi-element devices which detect combinations of incident and albedo neutrons. They were exposed to beams of mono-energetic neutrons, a thermal neutron column and a 252Cf source. The variation in response with neutron energy above 0.1 MeV was similar for all dosimeters. In general, multi-component dosimeters did not provide enough information to deduce the effective energy of incident neutrons. The choice of single or multi-element dosimeters for particular types of environment was discussed. The Harvey dosimeter had the nost acceptable thermal neutron response of the simpler devices. For neutron energies below 0.5 MeV its response varied roughly as the cosine of the angle of incidence but was more complex at higher energies.
