Recent Collections of the Amblyopsid Fish Chologaster papillifera in Illinois

Abstract
27 specimens of the spring cave fish, C. papillifera, were collected from small springs at 2 localities in Union Co., Ill. The fish showed a tendency to hide beneath the overhanging bank and under stones and to remain near the source of the spring. Three specimens examined had their digestive tracts filled with Gammarus which were abundant in both springs. Measurements of the 27 Chologaster were in general agreement with published descr. except with regard to relative eye diam. and number of dorsal and anal fin rays. All specimens were considered subadults since the vent had not completed its forward migration. Adult examples exhibit a proportionately smaller eye and a relatively broader interorbital region.
