Newly Recognized Route of Arbovirus Dissemination from the Mosquito (Diptera: Culicidae) Midgut1

Abstract
Examination of Rift Valley fever virus antigen distribution in the mosquito Culex (Culex) pipiens L. by the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex technique provided evidence that virus can disseminate into the hemocoel from cells located at the foregut/midgut junction. This may be an important route of dissemination from the mosquito gut.
