Abundance of Nitrous Oxide in Ground-Level Air*

Abstract
The abundance of nitrous oxide in ground-level air at Columbus, Ohio was measured by comparing the absorption of the P-branch of the 4.5-µ N2O band in atmospheric spectra, taken over a 706-meter path, with the corresponding absorptions by known amounts of N2O. The atmospheric absorption was found to correspond to a nitrous oxide abundance of 0.27±0.05 ppm. No variation in abundance was detected over a 3-month period.
