Abstract
The elevation of B.M.R. in rats after short periods of exposure to cold is associated with a rise in body temp. The u value of Arrhenius, detd. at normal body temps. of rats, is about 21,000, and it is not affected by thyroidectomy. Living for 3 wks. or more at 0[degree] to 5[degree]C. produced an avg. elevation in metabolism of 21%. Corrected for changes in body temp. this figure becomes 16%. This is brought about largely if not entirely by the thyroid gland; nervous pathways through the sup. cervical ganglia are not essential.
