The magnitude of de-methylation and degradation of some methylated sugars during conditions of acid hydrolysis has been studied. The conditions were typical for various procedures used for the hydrolysis of methylated poly-saccharides. The investigation thus throws some light upon possible sources of error when the structure of a polysaccharide is studied by the methylation technique.
