Abstract
Teaching Reading as Conversation (TRAC) is an innovation in the teaching of reading. Reading is taught in an environmental context, with immersion techniques, as though it were a foreign language. Emphasis is placed on immediacy and purposefulness. This procedure has been used successfully with non‐readers, and readers with severe reading difficulties and/or motivational problems. Specific procedures for employing the methodology with preschool, intermediate and high school exceptional students are presented. The procedure has been employed as an exclusive reading program for severely disabled readers who require functional reading skills only, as well as a program to stimulate entry into conventional reading programs. A significant strength of the program is its flexibility and ease of adaptability to the unique demands of each learning environment. Keywords
