Arthritis and Allied Conditions: A Textbook of Rheumatology is an impressive textbook and more than fulfills its role as a major reference of rheumatology. It is appropriately inclusive of the range of diseases and topics a rheumatologist or any other health care provider might require, although its length has required this 12th edition to be published in two volumes. One could question the space allotted to some topics, such as polymyalgia rheumatica (one of the more common rheumatic disorders) covered in only six pages in a chapter that also includes temporal arteritis, while the surgical treatment of elbow arthritis is covered in its own 12-page chapter; paleopathology receives two chapters (14 pages) at the textbook's beginning. Still, such nuances make a text unique, and the most important mission—to cover, update, and reference the essentials well—is certainly accomplished.
