To the Editor: We were interested in the observation made by Mahoney et al. (N Engl J Med 297:968–973, 1977) of visible hemolysis in three samples of blood obtained from a fetus with Duchenne's muscular dystrophy, and their suggestion that the hemolysis might reflect membrane instability of the fetal red cells in this disorder.We believe that the studies that we have carried out on the deformation of red cells in patients with various types of muscular dystrophy, and on the red cells of chick embryos and chickens with muscular dystrophy, support the suggestion of Mahoney et al. both that . . .
