Abstract
Investigated speed of responding to 2 bits of information presented sequentially from a single visual display. Variables manipulated were order of presentation of the bits, coding of the bits, and interval between the bits. The Ss (32 male and 32 female undergraduates) pressed 1 of 2 buttons (labeled 0 and 1) after viewing both a "data" stimulus (0 or 1) and a "rule" stimulus (red or green). The "rule" specified whether to press the button which corresponded to the "data" stimulus or the noncorresponding button. RT was fastest when the rule preceded the data. Corresponding responses were faster than noncorresponding responses, and the 550-msec interstimulus interval (ISI) resulted in faster responses than the 225-msec ISI.
