EFFECT OF THE ESTROUS CYCLE ON THE ACTION OF TESTOSTERONE PROPIONATE ON THE ORGAN AND BODY WEIGHTS OF FEMALE RATS1

Abstract
Adm. of testosterone propionate to mature [female] rats resulted in organ and body wt. changes which depended on the phase of the estrous cycle at the time of the 1st inj. When the initial inj. was given at late estrus, the ovaries, uteri, thyroids, and kidneys increased in wt. and the adrenals decreased in wt. There was no effect on the liver. When equal doses of the same hormone were administered at late diestrus, the wt. of the kidneys increased and that of the ovaries, liver, and adrenals decreased. The decrease in adrenal wt. was more marked in the diestrous than in the estrous group. There was no effect on the uterus and the thyroid. The instantaneous % rate of body growth was increased in both at estrus and diestrus but the effect was much greater at diestrus.
