Abstract
IT is an honour to be invited to join in the deliberations of this distinguished company, and I am very grateful for the compliment. I feel a good deal of trepidation also, not least because I come amongst you not as a fellow-scientist but as one of those antediluvian creatures who read literae humaniores at Oxford. I am therefore acutely aware of my limitations and handicaps.
