Iron Sepsis:Yersinia enterocoliticaSepticemia Possibly Caused by an Overdose of Iron

Abstract
To the Editor: In 1982, Melby and colleagues in Norway reported on two previously healthy children who ingested an overdose of iron and were treated with deferoxamine; Yersinia enterocolitica septicemia subsequently developed in these children.1 We report a case of iron overdose and acute Y. enterocolitica septicemia in the United States.A 15-month-old boy (a twin) was examined four to six hours after he had ingested approximately 30 tablets of ferrous sulfate (160 mg of elemental iron per kilogram of body weight).
